Pictured above are a section view and plan view depicting the Holland Tunnel, which connects Manhattan to Jersey City, drawn by Italian architect Renzo Picasso in 1929.


Like many of his drawings, Picasso doctored this one as an example for his hometown of Genoa. As Genoa is a port city, Picasso's choice to group these together with his drawings of DuSable Bridge in Chicago make sense as they depict two different ways to get a road across a body of water without disturbing aquatic traffic. In addition, this drawing and the DuSable Bridge below were both included as part of a larger set called “VIA SOPRA E SOTTO L'ACQUA.” As such, both these drawings help to understand the other drawings in the set, especially the section view of the Holland Tunnel on the second page.

ON A CURIOUS NOTE:
Picasso's drawings bear stark similarities to the drawings present in the official brochure released at the tunnel's grand opening on November 13, 1927 (pictured below) (Source: Hoboken Historical Museum). Considering Picasso visited New York in June of 1929, it is probable that he obtained a copy of this brochure to reference his drawings from. In addition, Picasso depicted the ventilation shafts in the river as if they were on concrete peninsulas. In reality, the only concrete reaching the riverbed are the slabs the shafts are placed on while they are connected to the mainland by means of a pier.

Nella foto sopra ci sono una vista in sezione e una vista in pianta raffiguranti l'Holland Tunnel, che collega Manhattan a Jersey City, disegnato dall'architetto italiano Renzo Picasso nel 1929. Come molti dei suoi disegni, Picasso ha falsificato questo come esempio per la sua città natale, Genova. NOTA CURIOSA:
I disegni di Picasso presentano forti somiglianze con i disegni presenti nella brochure ufficiale pubblicata all'inaugurazione del tunnel il 13 novembre 1927 (nella foto sotto) (Fonte: Museo storico di Hoboken). Considerando che Picasso visitò New York nel giugno del 1929, è probabile che abbia ottenuto una copia di questa brochure da cui fare riferimento ai suoi disegni. Inoltre, Picasso dipinse i pozzi di ventilazione nel fiume come se fossero su penisole di cemento. In realtà, l'unico calcestruzzo che raggiunge l'alveo sono le lastre su cui vengono posati i pozzi mentre sono collegati alla terraferma tramite un molo.

These drawings produced by Renzo Picasso in 1929 depict the Michigan Ave Bridge (today known as the DuSable Bridge) constructed in Chicago, Illinois in 1920.


As is the case with the Holland Tunnel drawings, Picasso created these plans as a guide on how his home city of Genoa could construct a road across the old harbor, as a bascule bridge can be raised to allow ships past. In addition, the inclusion of the bridge's various layers signifies Picasso's enthusiasm for the union of various modes of travel as the bridge carries automobile traffic while the subways sweep by under each side's road. In addition, this drawing and the Holland Tunnel above were both included as part of a larger set called “Via Sopra E Sotto L'Acqua.” As such, both these drawings help to understand the other drawings in the set, especially the section view of the Holland Tunnel on the second page.

ON A CURIOUS NOTE:
The sculptures featured prominently on the bridge's towers were designed incorrectly by Picasso. While the section view is of the southern side of the bridge, the drawings are depicted facing the river. In reality, these would be facing the road running perpendicular to the bridge. In addition, the sculptures do not match any of the four that exist, however they do resemble Defense by Henry Hering, which is on one of the southern towers. Furthermore the perpendicular road, labeled River Road in the drawing still exists, however it had its name changed to East Wacker Drive in 1926, which would have been in use while Picasso was there.

NOTA CURIOSA:
Le sculture in primo piano sulle torri del ponte sono state progettate in modo errato da Picasso. Mentre la vista in sezione è del lato sud del ponte, i disegni sono raffigurati di fronte al fiume. In realtà, questi sarebbero rivolti verso la strada che corre perpendicolare al ponte. Inoltre, le sculture non corrispondono a nessuna delle quattro esistenti, tuttavia assomigliano alla Difesa di Henry Hering, che si trova su una delle torri meridionali. Inoltre la strada perpendicolare, etichettata River Road nel disegno, esiste ancora, tuttavia nel 1926 il nome fu cambiato in East Wacker Drive, che sarebbe stato utilizzato mentre Picasso era lì.
